Located in the former St. Patrick’s Church in Lynn, the Asian Center helps approximately 50 clients each year by offering three levels of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. Many of the clients are Cambodian, but Vietnamese, Laotian, and Chinese immigrants also enroll. New participants are evaluated on their existing English proficiency, but many have no experience with the language. Students range in age from 18 to 80 years old.
While the center’s primary function is to teach English, it also provides access to employment and job search information and resources. Students also are educated on the importance of health care. One of the textbooks used is a basic picture dictionary, which includes information about the body and how they can identify ailments, symptoms, and injuries.
