Summer Programs

Brockton After Dark/Safe Spaces for Youth

The Brockton After Dark/Safe Spaces for Youth program exists to reduce serious incidents of violence among youth in Brockton during the summer months. The program provides safe, structured, evening activities drawing on the resources of the city’s churches, public recreational facilities, youth organizations, and other groups committed to curtail the escalation of violence and homicide. Activities include organized basketball and soccer leagues along with performing and visual art activities. Any youth between the ages of 13 and 18, boys and girls, who live in identified high crime areas are eligible for the program. No one is turned away.

During the school year, an after-school program is provided, which focuses on academic tutoring and the performing arts. A team of Brockton High School students serves as mentors to younger teens at the North Junior High School in Brockton. The Safe Spaces Youth Council members serve as mentors/tutors for a two-hour block after school once a week.

Catholic Charities South participates in the Brockton After Dark/Safe Spaces for Youth program. For more information, call 508-587-0815.

Sunset Point Camp

Sunset Point Camp, located in Hull, serves as a dream ‘vacation’ for 300 children each summer. The children come from all over the Greater Boston area representing diverse cultures, races, and religions, the great majority from lower income households. Others come from homes where extenuating circumstances are present such as the death of a parent or sibling, sudden departure of a family member, or a recent fire. The programs at Sunset Point Camp are designed around building life skills, including teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, self-esteem, sportsmanship, and good health.

Sunset Point Camp is a program of Catholic Charities Greater Boston. For more information, call 617-506-6600.
