Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services - Stand Together

“We pray for a heart which will embrace immigrants. God will judge us upon how we have treated the most needy.” – Pope Francis

On Saturday, January 28, 2017, one of our Catholic Charities staff attorneys, among others, stood in solidarity with refugees and immigrants at Logan International Airport offering their free legal services following the recent executive orders. New refugee arrivals to the United States will be suspended for a period of 120 days and Syrian refugee arrivals are suspended indefinitely. Since the implementation of these orders, Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services division has been inundated with calls for help.

Our clients include unaccompanied children, asylum seekers, survivors of domestic violence or crime, families separated from loved ones, and immigrants who want to be US citizens. Nearly 65 million people were displaced worldwide in 2016, the largest displacement of people since World War II. Of these, 23.1 million are refugees. 50% are children. The new executive action reduces refugee arrivals for FY17 from 110,000 to 50,000, denying thousands a lifeline to freedom and hope.

Posting on his blog, Cardinal Sean O’Malley reminds us that “The Catholic voice in the immigration debate calls for reform based on reason, compassion and mercy for those fleeing violence and persecution. At a pastoral level, in our country and in the Archdiocese of Boston, the Church must be a community which provides pastoral care, legal advice and social services to refugees and immigrants, as we have done in this Archdiocese for more than one hundred years. We will continue this important work through our parishes, Catholic Charities and our Catholic schools.”

With your help, Catholic Charities assists over 17,000 individuals through our Refugee and Immigration Services division. We have an immediate need to increase our legal services and parish outreach programs. Stand together with us and make your donation now.
