The following is Catholic Charities Boston statement:

Catholic Charities Boston is deeply concerned about the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision to allow for the cancellation of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which has provided Haitians and Syrians protections to live and work legally in the United States.

Catholic Charities Boston was founded over a century ago to ease the suffering of immigrants, then the Irish and Italians living in squalor in our city. Since then, our mission has been grounded in the belief that all humans deserve dignity and respect, and TPS has given families the opportunity to build stable lives and meaningfully contribute to our communities, in many cases, for more than a decade.

When the deadly and destructive earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, Catholic Charities was proud to welcome new arrivals and guide them in building a new life through healthcare job training and English classes — many of our graduates are working in hospitals, and nursing homes caring for others across the Commonwealth. Ending the TPS program will lead to the devastating loss of skilled workers and the separation of families, with many forced to return to nations the U.S. State Department warns have a high risk of crime, terrorism, unrest, and limited healthcare.

We remain committed to working with our immigrant neighbors to help them understand their legal options, connect with available resources, and support their families through this uncertain transition with the dignity every person deserves.
