From El Centro to the City of Boston: Catholic Charities Graduate Launches Cybersecurity Career

Catholic Charities Boston El Centro graduate, Jack, first immigrated from China to Boston in 2023. With over a decade of experience in Information Technology and data analysis, Jack said he was determined to expand his growing career in cybersecurity, as he and his family sought to build a new life in the U.S.

Very quickly, however, Jack said he felt the impact of the language barrier and struggled to identify employment opportunities that aligned with his long-term career goals.

“When I first came to the U.S., I didn’t have local education, experience, or resources,” he said. “It was difficult to find a job or start a business.”

That all changed when a friend told Jack about El Centro’s IT/Cybersecurity pathway, which offers workforce development and technical training to help individuals gain skills and experience to advance in the fields of IT and cybersecurity. Jack said he immediately felt it was the perfect opportunity to deepen his expertise and break into the field in Boston.

Now, looking back, he credits Catholic Charities Boston for not only catalyzing his career but for providing him with an incredible community of mentors and classmates he remains in touch with today.

“The cybersecurity training had a profound impact on me,” Jack said. “It strengthened both my theoretical knowledge and hands-on technical skills. During the program, the staff regularly checked in with us to understand our progress and challenges.”

Today, Jack is a Cybersecurity Fellow with the City of Boston, where he plays a key role in protecting the city’s digital infrastructure. Jack said the position has strengthened his commitment to both public service and lifelong learning. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue his work with the City of Boston full-time.

Reflecting on his journey, Jack expressed deep gratitude for his El Centro teachers and mentors, who reminded him that he was capable of anything he set his mind to.

“During one of the most difficult times in my life, Catholic Charities El Centro Adult Education Center gave me the opportunity and support to start a new chapter,” he said. “I’m committed to using my skills, experience, and passion for cybersecurity to give back to the community and help others the way they helped me.”
