Boston College Parents Leadership Council Donate 1200 Soup Kits to Catholic Charities Boston

For the second year in a row, over 200 members of the Boston College Parents Leadership Council gathered on campus during Family Weekend to pack soup kits that were donated to Catholic Charities Boston.

Thanks to the overwhelming success of this initiative last year, the PLC expanded the event to include two forty-five-minute packing sessions, in which parents doubled their impact and stocked a total of 1,200 soup kits, equating to roughly 5,000 meals for families in need.

This nutrient-packed recipe, nicknamed ‘Soaring Soup,’ includes all the fixings for a delicious, homemade meal for a family of four, from pasta to beans to bay leaves and spices.

Having thoughtfully created the soup recipe and the mission behind it, Veronica Bloom, PLC Emeritus and former PLC Co-Chair, once again served as a driving force behind this event, working closely with Boston College and Catholic Charities to ensure they reached as many families in need as possible.

“When you give to Catholic Charities, you can feel confident that it’s going to get into the hands of those who need it most,” said Veronica, who lives outside of Boston. “What resonates with me is that Catholic Charities has always supported families. The soup kit is not only food but is also a way of bringing a family of four together around a table to share a meal.”

While Catholic Charities Boston’s four food pantries serve nearly 70,000 individuals annually, one in three Massachusetts families continues to face food insecurity. The Soaring Eagle soup kits not only help to alleviate hunger but also offer a tangible message of hope, with each kit containing a handwritten note: ‘You are not alone.’ ‘You are loved.’ ‘Brighter days are ahead.’

Catholic Charities colleagues joined on campus to show their support and gratitude, including Paula Finnerty, Senior Vice President of Advancement and a Boston College alum herself, as well as Christine Keller, Director of Food Pantries, who shared remarks about the vital impact of the volunteers’ teamwork.

“As you know, these current times are really hard on the marginalized in our communities,” said Christine. “Just know that every minute you are giving here really makes a difference and impacts the lives of those we serve. We are so grateful.”
