College Student Seeks To Build Positive Experiences at Yawkey Child Care Center

As someone who had an unstable childhood growing up, Aleyo Amasa-Titus, a junior at Regis College, knows the importance that positive experiences have on a child’s development.

So, as a child care intern at Catholic Charities of Boston’s Yawkey Center in Dorchester, Mass., she wants to ensure the children experience positivity.

“I really like it,” said Amasa-Titus, who is studying social work at Regis. “Kids are so adventurous and have so much that they want to learn. And I want to help build positive experiences for them because my interactions could eventually help shape them into becoming great people.”

The Yawkey Center provides support and programs across CCAB’s four core service areas: basic needs, family and youth services, refugee and immigrant services, and adult education and workforce development.

Amasa-Titus began interning at Yawkey earlier this year after learning about the opportunity from her advisor at Regis. She spends about eight hours a week caring for the toddlers and infants there. Her responsibilities include playing with the children, feeding them bottles, and putting them down for naps.

“It is really great seeing them grow and develop new skills,” Amasa-Titus said.

She is among the more than 15,000 volunteers whose dedication and time over the past 12 months have made a positive impact on the communities across Eastern Massachusetts that the agency serves. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, beginning April 27, CCAB will recognize and celebrate those who play such a key role in its mission.

“I want to help people feel cared for and give them positive experiences and be there for them,” Amasa-Titus said of volunteering. “I feel like I am making an impact on the children, and it feels like a reward that I can give back.”

A member of the Regis College women’s soccer and track and field teams, Amasa-Titus started college studying digital marketing. She changed to social work in part because she wanted to make a greater difference in the lives of others.
