Catholic Charities Boston Part of New Energy Assistance Program For Senior Citizens

Catholic Charities Boston (CCAB) will join other community organizations across Massachusetts to help provide energy cost relief education and resources to fixed-income senior citizens.

This new initiative by United Way of Massachusetts Bay, United Way of Central Massachusetts, National Grid, and the National Grid Foundation is part of a $2.2 million investment to provide direct relief and outreach efforts throughout the Commonwealth.

“We are going to provide one-on-one support to seniors, helping them plan out a budget, and connecting them to discount programs to National Grid’s discount programs,” explained Faiza Hafeez, Director of Financial Assistance and Community Supports.

Hafeez added that the educational programs will focus on CCAB’s Adult Education classes, and the agency will also share information with any senior who reaches out directly for utility assistance.

The initiative was officially announced at an event on April 29. Joining CCAB as grant recipients are Action for Boston Community Development, LEO Inc., The Neighborhood Developers, Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, NeighborWorks Housing Solutions, and Elder Services of Worcester Area.

The grant money CCAB will receive to assist seniors is in addition to a grant from the National Grid Foundation for direct utility assistance. This new initiative further continues a longstanding partnership between CCAB, United Way, and National Grid ensuring people across Eastern Massachusetts have access to the basic yet critical resources needed to achieve self-sufficiency
