Catholic Charities Boston Welcomes Semi-Truck Full of Donated Food From The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The semi-truck that rolled into the Catholic Charities Boston’s Yawkey Center on Wednesday, June 17, drove across the country with more than 40,000 pounds worth of donated food.
The journey was significant, the donations are substantial, but the assistance and relief it will bring to neighbors across Greater Boston will have the greatest impact.
Catholic Charities Boston leadership and staff were joined by representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other Greater Boston faith leaders to welcome the truck, as well as celebrate the incredible partnerships and the unifying efforts to address food insecurity across the country.
“This partnership between Catholic Charities Boston and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents neighbors helping neighbors, regardless of circumstances or faith lines,” Catholic Charities Boston President and CEO Kelley Tuthill said at the event. “The demand for food assistance continues to grow, but this partnership brings significant relief in ensuring that our neighbors do not go hungry.”
This semi-truck from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the second of three to come to Massachusetts in 2026 as part of a nationwide initiative to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary. Two hundred and fifty trucks will deliver food donations to locations in all 50 states.
“This 250-truck initiative has been a great success because it not only helps thousands upon thousands who are hungry, but also raises awareness of those needs and brings people together to serve,” said Elder Allen Haynie, General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Strangers who serve together become friends, and friends who serve together become even better friends.”
A majority of the food will be distributed to Greater Boston churches, faith communities, and other organizations on Saturday, June 20 at the Yawkey Center pantry. Catholic Charities will receive a portion of the food donation to provide to families in the community struggling with food insecurity.
“Whenever we can leverage our facilities and infrastructures and amplify what others are doing in ways that align with Catholic Charities’ mission, we want to be there to help,” said Jonathan Tetrault, Catholic Charities Boston’s Vice President of Economic Empowerment.
Catholic Charities Boston’s partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints goes back several years and far beyond the semi-truck food donation. The Church has also participated in Catholic Charities’ annual turkey distribution at Thanksgiving and has supported Catholic Charities’ clients through their Light the World Giving Machine initiative during the holidays.
